The heebie-jeebies of being a mom!
"Hey champ! Do you want this two-wheeled skate board?", my man asks our 10 year old son over the video call. I give a 'raised eyebrow' glance at them.
We are at the Decathlon and the sports gears amuse me. Everytime there's something new in there and my man wishes to buy all those for our sons.
"Wow Baba! This looks awesome. It's called a waveboard. Please buy me one", son looks excited, on the other side of the call. He does his happy flip with the tab in his hand, from the bed to the ground. And my motherly instincts bring out their antennae.
"Be careful, you will get hurt and your tab will split into pieces too", I say out loud.
The couple standing next to us in the aisle, smiles, upon hearing me shout, looking at the screen. "They seem to be newly married. Wait until you become parents", my soliloquy.
Now that the skate board goes into the cart, my heart starts beating faster. "What's with the boys and their dangerous adventures?", me thinking in my mind. I quickly rush to the other aisle and grab a kit of helmet, elbow guards and knee guards.
My man smirks and I give him an idiom "Prevention is better than cure".
"Yes of course", he agrees, still smiling.
That's how moms are, right? We want our kids to learn all sorts of things, skating, cycling, karate, swimming or boxing too. But then "Don't forget your swimming goggles, carry the cap too, don't kick too hard or else the opponent will do the same"..etc..etc. We keep giving them instructions.
I taught both my sons to ride the bicycle. When I was a kid, I did lot of stunts on the cycle. But when my kids do the same, I yell out from the balcony to them riding on the road. "Don't leave your hand while riding the cycle. What's with the wheely-Sheely you're trying to do?".
Just like the gadgets come with instruction manual, kids are accompanied by their live manuals everywhere.
So, our son ventures with the newly bought waveboard. Yes, he falls, he slips, he says his bum pains also his ankles. But he doesn't stop trying. And he succeeds, within couple of hours.
I act all laid back, while watching his tryst to skate smoothly on the waveboard. But innately, with his every fall, I get those heebie-jeebies. I abstain from showing it on my face, as I am avoiding to discourage him. But the collywobbles are always there.
He comes to me and hugs me, on his latest achievement. "Don't worry mumma, I don't feel the pain anymore", he says looking into my eyes, with confidence. The mom in me melts and the sanguine mom in me feels proud.
